A Yearly Roundup of Pakistan Cricket in 2023
The cricketing arena in Pakistan saw lots of action in 2023, marked by triumphs and setbacks. Let’s take a closer look at the top highlights that defined the year:
Overall Record in 2023:
Out of 41 matches, Pakistan secured victory in 20 – a mix of wins, losses, and the usual cricket drama! With a win percentage of 49, we claimed the fifth spot among test-playing nations.
In the last decade, Pakistan cricket has only performed worse than this year thrice – in 2014, 2016, and 2019. So, by our own standards, it was a disappointing performance.
Performances of the Year:
In 2023, Pakistan cricket fans were treated to some spectacular performances. Fakhar Zaman’s unbeaten 126 against New Zealand in a 400-run chase was the standout performance, showcasing the team’s resilience and fighting spirit.
Adding to the year’s highlights, Babar Azam achieved the remarkable feat of scoring 10 centuries in T20 cricket, becoming only the second batter after Chris Gayle to do so. His consistent excellence has become as much a part of our routine as our daily cup of chai.
Oops Moment – Nawaz Sahab:
In a year of ups and downs for Pakistan cricket, Mohammad Nawaz’s slump was particularly noticeable. A batting average of just 19.75 and a bowling average of 58 earned him the unwanted title of ‘Flop of the Year’, showing he fell short of what was expected from an all-around of his caliber.
Now, let’s talk about the highlights of 2023:
ODI Supremacy and Pace Powerhouse:
Pakistan soared to the top of the ODI rankings. At that time, three of our batters held the top 5 ICC rankings, and our pace attack was hailed as the world’s best – a feeling of “pride and confidence!”
Missed Opportunities and PSL Madness:
The biggest missed opportunities for Pakistan were Naseem Shah’s injury and not clinching the World Cup in Indian conditions. PSL 2023, however, was arguably the best edition yet, with several T20 records shattered. Emerging talents like Saim Ayub, Ihsan Ullah, Zaman Khan, and Azam Khan became the success stories of PSL 8.
Player Contracts in a Fresh Avatar:
The introduction of new player contracts, with a 200% increase in salaries and extended contract periods to 3 years, marked a significant change
Farewell to Legends:
Imad Wasim, Wahab Riaz, and Asad Shafique retired – their departures were heartfelt moments for fans. Let’s remember and honor these cricketing legends!
