India ODI Squad vs Australia 2025 Announced : Kohli & Rohit Make a Powerful Comeback!

international Cricket

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the India ODI Squad vs Australia 2025, and it comes with major updates. The biggest news is that Shubman Gill has officially replaced Rohit Sharma as India’s new ODI captain. At the same time, both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have made their long-awaited comebacks to the ODI setup for the three-match series in Australia starting October 19.

Shubman Gill Takes Over ODI Captaincy

The selection panel led by Ajit Agarkar decided to hand over the ODI captaincy to Shubman Gill, aiming to build a young leadership core ahead of the ICC ODI World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Gill, just 26, will now lead India in both Tests and ODIs, while also serving as vice-captain in T20Is. The India ODI Squad vs Australia 2025 marks the beginning of this new leadership phase, giving Gill his first major challenge as full-time captain.

Agarkar explained that with limited ODI matches before the next World Cup, it was important to give Shubman Gill enough time and experience to grow as a leader. He said,

“At some stage, you have to start preparing for the next World Cup. ODIs are played less often now, so it’s important to give the new captain time to settle and plan for the future.”

Despite stepping down from captaincy, Rohit Sharma remains a key part of the India ODI Squad vs Australia 2025 as a senior batter. Under his leadership, India won the 2023 Asia Cup, reached the ODI World Cup final, and lifted the 2025 Champions Trophy. His experience, along with Kohli’s, will be crucial for Gill’s young side.

Kohli-Rohit Return to the India ODI Squad vs Australia 2025

After seven months away from international cricket, both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma return for the India vs Australia ODI series 2025. Their last appearance was in the Champions Trophy final earlier this year. The duo will bring much-needed experience and stability to the batting lineup.

Alongside them, Shreyas Iyer has been named vice-captain, while players like KL Rahul, Kuldeep Yadav, and Washington Sundar also find their spots. However, Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the ODIs to manage workload, though he will feature in the T20I series later.

Key Changes in the Squad

Compared to the Champions Trophy-winning squad, the India ODI Squad vs Australia 2025 features some interesting changes. Senior players like Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya, and Varun Chakravarthy are not part of this ODI series. Jadeja has been rested to maintain the overall team balance, while Hardik is still recovering from his injury and focusing on full fitness before the next major tournament.

To fill the gaps and bring fresh energy, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel, and Yashasvi Jaiswal have been included. These young talents not only add depth to the squad but also gain valuable international experience, which will help India build a stronger and more balanced team for the future.
